Synopsis:

The fight surrounding the construction of a pipeline in Canada starts in 2014 and ends when Covid-19 interferes with human ambitions. The camera has captured whole story — from economic prosperity resulting from a rise in natural resource extraction to the battle between pro and anti-pipeline groups. It ends with the pandemic bringing economic demise to people in both camps – a warning from nature to slow down.

Director’s profile:

Julia Ivanova is a Canadian documentary director, producer, editor and cinematographer who was honoured with a retrospective at Hot Docs Film Festival in 2019 as a “significant Canadian filmmaker”. Ivanova is the creative force behind ten feature and TV documentaries. Her film Family Portrait In Black And White, about a Ukrainian foster mother and her 17 mixed-race foster children, was screened at Sundance and was named Best Canadian Feature at Hot Docs.“Love Translated”, “Fatherhood Dreams”, “From Russia, For Love” “Loving a Stranger” are some of Ivanova’s other films.“Julia Ivanova is a bright light in the Canadian documentary world. Synopsis:

After being outed by the media after death as being assigned female at birth, the ongoing chronicle of jazz musician Billy Tipton is a tale of conflicting and contrasting stories. By juxtaposing perspectives of trans culture makers with media history and the complex lived experience of Tipton’s son Billy Jr., NO ORDINARY MAN paints a portrait of an unlikely transgender hero.

Director’s profile: 

Aisling Chin-Yee is an award-winning producer, writer, and director based in Montreal, Canada. Aisling was named one of Canada’s Rising Film Stars by Now Magazine 2019. Her feature film directorial debut, The Rest of Us, starring Heather Graham (Boogie Nights, The Hangover), and Sophie Nélisse (The Book Thief) premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2019. Aisling also produced the award winning feature film, Rhymes for Young Ghouls, Last Woman Standing , The Saver among others. 2014 marked her year as writer and director with the short film, Sound Asleep. In 2015, she directed the multi-award winning documentary Synesthesia. In 2017, she co-founded the #AfterMeToo movement. In 2018 she was selected in the inaugural cohort of professionals in the 50 Women Can Change the World in Media and Entertainment in Hollywood. In 2019, Aisling received the TIFF Canning Fellowship.

Co-Director’s profile: 

Chase Joynt is a transgender moving-image artist and writer whose films have won jury and audience awards internationally. His latest short film, Framing Agnes, premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, won the Audience Award at Outfest in Los Angeles, and is being developed into a feature film with support from Telefilm Canada’s Talent to Watch program. Awarded the EP Canada/Canada Film Capital Award for Emerging Canadian Artist, Joynt’s first book You Only Live Twice (co-authored with Mike Hoolboom) was a 2017 Lambda Literary Award Finalist and named one of the best books of the year by The Globe and Mail and CBC.

Kell’s work has screened at film festivals worldwide, notably Cannes, SXSW, and AFI Fest. Les Libres is a full-length documentary feature which shows us how four detainees are dealing with the end of their prison sentence, in a sawmill. Can a factory job help them to make the necessary transformation and become free men? Hidden from society’s view and through meetings with their instructors, psychotherapists and other participants, we accompany Samuel, Pierrot, Fred and Steve talk about their hopes and fears during this six-month transition period.

Director’s profile: 

Nicolas Levesque is a Canadian photographer and filmmaker. His images are the subject of exhibitions and projects of award-winning editions such as LUTTE (Editions la Peuplade) and Derniers souverains (Editions Poètes de Brousse). His documentary film In guns we trust was honored Best Short Film at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013, as well as Interview with a Free Man, in 2015, produced by the National Film Board of Canada. Since 2010, he has collaborated regularly with Télé-Québec, TV5, RDI and Radio-Canada in the production of documentaries for television.

Diane Sara Bouzgarrou was born in 1985 in France. Since the end of her studies, she has been active in both fields of cinema and video art. Her last medium-length film, I REMEMBER NOTHING, premiered at Cinéma du Réel 2017 (Special Mention from Youth jury) and was shown in many festivals such as Torino Film Festival, Jihlava Intl Documentary Festival, the RIDM in Montréal, DOK Fest München, etc. In France it is distributed by Docks 66.

Co-Director’s profile: 

Thomas Jenkoe lives and works in France as a director, a DoP and a producer. He is one of the founders and partners of the production company Triptyque Films, where he has produced over 20 films since 2010 (films that were shown at Tribeca, Rotterdam, Karlovy Vary and the like). As a director, his MEMORIES FROM GEHENNA won the French competition at Cinéma du Réel in 2015 and was shown in many other places, most notably ar the DocFortnight of the MoMa in New York.

Director’s profile: 

Alvaro Gurrea (Barcelona, 1988) explores through his works the notion of identity, in historical, political and cultural terms, and its relation with the conception of the otherness. He has directed the short film Crossboundaries, premiered at Santa Monica Art Center in 2016 and has been a curator at Swab Art Fair, conceiving projects as So Close, So Far, which explored the idea of distance in the hyperconnected era. Since 2014 he has been partly living in Indonesia developing together with a local community in East Java his first feature film, which will be concluded by the end of 2020. He has a degree in Economics by the University of Barcelona and a Master in Creative Documentary by the Pompeu Fabra, where his final project was tutored by Marie Pierre Duhamel- Muller.

Dawn in Venice Beach, California. Every morning, the homeless people living by the beach wake up and need to tidy up the space where they spend the night. As the sun slowly rises, their voices express their views of the world. Every morning, like in a Sysiphean play, it looks like nothing changes. Every morning, little by little, the country and the neighborhood by the sea they call home, are changing in strange and scary ways.

Director’s profile: 

Marion Naccache lives and works between Paris and Rio de Janeiro. She studied contemporary poetry at École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. In 2008, she starts composing video essays that have been shown in several contemporary art institutions (Miami Basel, Southard Reid Gallery, London; Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, Gulbenkian Foundation, Paris) and poetry venues (Festival PAN!, Nioques, OEI, Labia Gentil). CONEY ISLAND, (last summer), 2010, lovestreams/agnès b., her first feature film, has been shown in international film festivals (Miami, Belfort, Rio). The film observes the last summer of the amusement park and starts a series of movies about urban beaches in which she develops a contemplative form of observation based on time, distance and repetition to look at the world at a different pace. VENICE BEACH, CA, her second feature film, continues that dispositive and takes it further.

Nicolas Peduzzi is a French actor and director, born in 1985 in Paris. After few appearances for the cinema as an actor, especially in Luc Bondy’s film False Confidences, Nicolas Peduzzi directs the documentary feature Southern Belle, released in France in 2018. The film won the FID Marseille’s 2017 Grand Price and is part of the Best of doc selection for the 2019 month of documentary.
