Bunbuku is a Tokyo-based production company founded in 2014 by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Since its inception, it has built a global presence through artistic excellence. The company champions a diverse portfolio of internationally recognized works, from the Palme d’Or winner ‘Shoplifters’ (2018), ‘The Truth’ (2019), ‘Broker’ (2022), and ‘Monster’ (2023) to acclaimed new voices like ‘Any Crybabies Around?’ (2020), ‘My Small Land’ (2022) and the Cannes-selected ‘A Pale View of Hills’ (2025).

Tokyo Theatres Company, Inc. is a film company that started its first film theater in 1946. It plans, produces, and distributes films while running a total of 8 theaters (5 in Tokyo, 1 in Osaka , Hyogo and Kyoto Prefectures). It has established a position as the largest theater chain in the Japanese independent film scene, both of domestic and international works.

Shochiku also has a film studio in Kyoto.

GENERATION11 is one of the few bilingual production companies in Japan. Producing narrative and documentary films both domestically and internationally, A chief producer, Yusuke Kamata has been producing international productions such as “Tokyo Vice” (HBOmax, 2022) and “Detective Chinatown 3”, and also documentaries like “Fugitive: The Curious Case of Carlos Ghosn (Netflix, 2022)”, “Missing: The Lucie Blackman Case” (Netflix, 2023), “Dust to Dust” (2024 Tribeca Film Festival award winner).

A Girl & Her Guard Dog by Kenichi Kobayashi

dwarf studios celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023, beginning with the birth of the well-known character “DOMO” and “Komaneko,” an iconic idol cat of the stop-motion industry.
The studio has survived the era of CGI with producing high-quality stop-motion films that can be enjoyed timelessly, having played a leading role in positioning the studio as one of the first in Japan to collaborate with global streamers. They also launched the Rilakkuma and Pokémon series from Netflix, which is now in the limelight.
dwarf focuses on creating works that incorporate new talent and technologies, transcending traditional methods and company frameworks. The latest projects include Bottle George, an Oscars 2025 shortlisted short film directed by Dice Tsutsumi (former Pixar Director), and HIDARI, which has made a major impact on the industry, despite only being a pilot.

Barravento is a Tokyo-based production company dedicated to international co-productions and director-driven filmmaking. Founded after years of experience at MAM FILM on numerous international productions shot in Japan, it builds on long-standing collaborations with partners worldwide. In 2026, Barravento was established in collaboration with the U.S.-based company Spacemaker Productions to develop new international projects. The company aims to build a platform for global film production based in Japan.

Founded in 1951, Toei Company, Ltd. is one of Japan’s leading film studios, producing and distributing acclaimed works such as Shohei Imamura’s The Ballad of Narayama (Palme d’Or, Cannes 1983) and Black Rain (Cannes 1989). Toei’s productions have won both the Golden and Silver Bears at Berlinale and continue to bridge art and entertainment worldwide. Recent international collaborations include Dear Stranger (Japan–Taiwan– USA, 2025) and While the Women Are Sleeping (dir. Wayne Wang, Berlinale Panorama 2016).
