Cannes Gala: Ceremonial Conferment of Preuve de Do, Honouring the Next 100 Years of Culture

Cannes Gala 2026 was held on 17 May at the Plage des Palmes, in collaboration with the Marché du Film, the official film market of the Festival de Cannes. Before 150 invited guests from 26 countries, the ceremony conferred Preuve de Do, “The Proof of the Path”, upon six honourees whose work, organisations, technologies, ideas and cultural practices are expected to contribute meaningfully to the next 100 years.

This year’s honourees comprised Phil Tippett, a guiding figure through the historic transition from SFX to VFX; Scott Ross, who helped shape the industrial structure of Hollywood visual effects; Turnbull & Asser, the historic British house that inscribed sartorial culture into cinematic memory; Masao Maruyama, the producer who has supported authorship and artistic integrity in Japanese animation; Teruyuki Omote, representing LUMINE, a company connecting culture through urban curation; and AI, the singer whose gospel-rooted physicality and voice stand between North America and Asia as she advances toward the Grammys.

At a time when generative AI is reshaping both analogue and digital creation, those who have lived through past technological transformations and those who will carry the next culture forward were brought together within the same ceremonial space.

At the centre of Cannes Gala stands “Honest and Noble.” This principle serves as the spiritual standard of the ceremony itself. Film, animation, music, fashion, technology, urban curation, enterprise and cultural institutions were brought together as part of a wider cultural sphere forming the next era of the content industries, allowing values that cross disciplines to be recognised within a single space.

As generative AI expands the threshold of production, platforms determine the order of circulation and short-term metrics accelerate judgement, Cannes Gala turned its attention to contributions that resist speed, to values that the next generation may inherit and to the resolve of those who continue to stand within the field.

Prior to the ceremony, Eve Ball was held as an eve society for Cannes Gala invitees. Through attire, dialogue and introduction, it was composed as a space in which trust could be prepared for the following day’s ceremony. From this year onward, the pot-pourri of Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, founded in Florence in 1221, has been designated as the official scent of Cannes Gala. Carrying the memory of herbal knowledge and craftsmanship across centuries, the fragrance will continue to symbolise the memory of the ceremonial space in future editions of Cannes Gala.

Within the context of urban curation, the vision of LUMINE under the mission of “connecting culture 100 years into the future,” was also connected to the ceremony. LUMINE presents a vision for a world-scale cultural axis city, where narrative, daily life and cultural transmission overlap, pointing toward an expanded field for the next content industries.

The practical execution of the ceremony was undertaken by NOMA, an international house supporting multiple cultural circuits. In addition to Cannes Gala and Eve Ball, NOMA quietly connected the operations, documentation, relationships and production that extend toward AXLR8-G in the music field, as well as film, animation and original works, functioning as the executional foundation that supported the value of the ceremony.

In Cannes, Cannes Gala 2026 showed how society, recognition, fragrance and urban curation may be woven into a single ceremonial form. Looking toward its next edition, the ceremony will continue to select, deepen and elevate the values that the content industries should carry forward.
