Synopsis:

A Thousand Fires is a tale of family, oil, and life cycles in Myanmar’s artisanal oil fields. Parents Twe Tin and Thein Shwe struggle daily in the unregulated oil industry, their futures and fortunes governed by a complex web of fate, luck, karma, and astrological magic.

Director’s profile:

Saeed Taji Farouky is a Palestinian/British filmmaker who has been producing work around themes of conflict, human rights and colonialism since 2004.
His previous documentary, TELL SPRING NOT TO COME THIS YEAR, premiered at the Berlinale 2015 where it won the Audience Choice Panorama award and the Amnesty Human Rights Award.
His films focus on exile and the lingering trauma of conflict. He tells intimate, personal stories with an emphasis on humanism, and its mirror image: surrealism. Saeed participated in the Edinburgh International Film Festival talent lab and the Torino Script Lab with his first fiction feature project.

Producer’s profile:

Estelle Robin You has (co-)produced over 20 films internationally (Sweden, Greece, Mali, Canada, UK, Belgium…), supported by funds such as Aide aux Cinémas du Monde, Sundance documentary fund, HotDocs-Blue Ice, IDFA Bertha, Field of Vision amongst others. Her productions have been shown on TVs (ARTE, France TV, RTS, SVT, YLE …) and theatres worldwide as well as major documentary festivals such as IDFA, Hot Docs, Visions du Réel, Cinéma du Réel and most recently CPH:DOX with the DOX:AWARD winner THE LAST SHELTER by Ousmane Samassékou. Estelle is a partner in the company Point du Jour – Les films du balibari, a merger between the companies after 6 years of partnership. She has been a mentor for workshops such as Produire au Sud (Agadir Fidadoc) and Eurodoc (regional groups), and is a EAVE producer’s worksop alumni, where she developed A THOUSAND FIRES with Saeed Taji Farouky in 2016.

Synopsis:

Jelco, Justin, Rabetsy and Mamy are employed in a car wash, Ndaty is rickshaw driver. They came from different regions of Madagascar. These young people develop a solidarity of their daily work. Without an identity card, they are exploited by a boss who imposes his presence by a surveillance camera. The director takes another look at these young people and offers a polyphonic story in which the violence.

Director’s profile:

Michael Andrianaly was born on July 8, 1978 in Tamatave, Madagascar. He is a photographer, director and editor. He participated in writing residencies at the Alliance Française of Tamatave between 2012 and 2015, except in 2014 when he learned production. Michaël Andrianaly has directed 3 documentaries: TODISOA AND THE BLACK STONES (2013), NJAKA KELY (2016) and NOFINOFY (2019). In 2019, NOFINOFY received two awards from the Institut Français and the CNAP Prize. He was also awarded “Étoile de la SCAM 2019”. GWETTO, his work in progress was selected in March 2021 as part of ParisDOC’s WIP, the professional component of Cinéma du Réel.

Producer’s profile:

In 2014, Michaël Andrianaly trained as a producer in Toamasina with Doc Oi (light of the world), then founded Imasoa Film. In 2015, with Njaka kely, he produced his first film in co-production with Films de la pluie (France). Imasoa Film is in charge of the artistic and executive part of the project. In 2017, the same co-production continues on the project NOFINOFY. In March 2020, with little means, Michaël Andrianaly begins filming GWETTO. The film, carried only by Imasoa Film, is in production.

Synopsis:

Hidden in a truck, eight migrants from various countries try to survive the hunger and anguish of a long illegal journey across borders. Their stories resonate and mingle into their bodies and minds with the stories of European emigrants of a century ago.

Director’s profile:

Laurent Van Lancker both studied Film and Anthropology, and holds a PhD in Audiovisual Art. He lectures at film schools and universities. His films were screened in major film festivals: IDFA, Oberhausen, DOKLeipzig, FNC Montréal, Dubai IFF, … and cinemas. Recently, he has also moved into Visual Arts, having his video installations screened in museums, galleries, art spaces. His films explore inter-cultural dialogue, and draw on various modes: Collaborative, Hybrid and Sensory cinema. They propose a dialogue between ethics and aesthetics, poetics and politics.

Producer’s profile:

David Borgeaud and Erika Meda founded Roue Libre Production in 2014 with an aim to accompany and support directors in their artistic processes, with no restriction of genre or format. Over time, they started developing feature films, fictions and documentaries, as well as hybrids and experimental films. David serves at the head of industry relations at the FIFF Namur since 2018. He’s also an alumnus of the Rotterdam Lab and a reader for the Belgian French-speaking Film Fund.

Synopsis:

I meet Pierrot at the fall 2018. A few weeks later, we demonstrate together in the heart of the Gilets jaunes movement. The earth is shaking and our hearts as well. Our impulse is blending with the one of thousands of other ones who express their anger in the street every Saturday, for months. But how to conciliate free love and revolution, when everything around is stopping us ?

Director’s profile:

Born at Paris, Laurie Lassalle lived a nomadic childhood between France and Nigeria. Movie editor and musician, she directs various musical clips.
In 2014, she directs her first fiction medium-length film, LES FLEUVES M’ONT LAISSE DESCENDRE OU JE VOULAIS, (selected at the Semaine de la Critique of Cannes).
In 2016, she directs JE SUIS GONG with the Mille Visage Association, shot in the Grande Borne city with young people living there.
She’s actually developing a scenario of fiction feature film, co-wrote with Lucille Dupré, FELINES. With this project, she’s a laureate of the writing scholarship Beaumarchais, of Next Step, then resident at the Moulin d’Andé (2015), at the Torino Film Lab (2016), at the Premiers Plans workshop (2017) and So Film de genre (2018).
Today, this two documentaries in progress, FORET ROUGE and UPRISING, are produced by Les Films de l’oeil sauvage.
